5 Key ways that help with childcare costs

15 hours a week for 38 weeks a year for parents in receipt of benefits (including in-work benefits) or for children who are disabled or looked after.

To apply for 2-year-old funding you must, as a family, be claiming at least one of the following benefits –

  • Income Support

  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

  • Universal Credit, and your household income is £15,400 a year or less after tax, not including benefit payments

  • the guaranteed element of Pension Credit

  • Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit (or both), and your household income is £16,190 a year or less before tax

  • the Working Tax Credit 4-week run on (the payment you get when you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

2-year-olds can also get free childcare if they –

  • are looked after by a local authority

  • have an education, health and care (EHC) plan

  • get Disability Living Allowance

  • have left care under an adoption order, special guardianship order or a child arrangements order

It is planned that all working parents will get 15 hours per week for all 2 year olds starting April 2024 – speak with us to find out more.

15 hours per week for ALL 3 and 4 year olds, for 38 weeks a year, which is 570 hours per year.

You can take this stretched throughout the 51 weeks in the year we are open, which is the equivalent of 11 hours per week.

You can get these hours the term after your child has turned 3 years old by providing your National Insurance No and the child’s birth certificate, which proves proof of age. You bring these documents to your nursery manager and they will sort everything out for you.

Extended hours provide an additional 15 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year on top of your 15 Universal Hours, to make a total of 30 hours per week. These additional (extended) 15 hours are for working parents and you must work a certain amount of hours per week and not earn more than £100,000 per year. If not you are automatically entitled to the 15 universal hours only.

30 hours per week for 3 8weeks a year totals 1,140 hours per year. When stretched over the 51 weeks we are open is the equivalent of 22 hours per week.

Once you have claimed at the above gov.uk website you will be given an 11-digit code which along with your National Insurance No and Child’s birth certificate will enable your nursery manager to claim the 15 extended hours on your behalf to make your hours up to 30 per week.

Covers 20% of your childcare costs up to a maximum of £2,000 per child per year.

Parents and their partner (if they have one) must earn at least the equivalent of 16 hours a week at the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage. Parents earnings cannot exceed £100,000 per year.

You open a TFC account you must apply online at https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-tax-free-childcare this is the same place you apply for the extended 15 hours childcare so can be done in tandem.

You can open a TFC even if your child is under 2 or 3. Even if you don’t get any government hours, you can still use a TFC account to get 20% of your invoices paid.

Everyone should apply for a TFC once they start paying for childcare.

If you are working, Universal Credit can help with the costs of childcare, no matter how many hours you work. Claimants are able to claim back up to 85% of their childcare costs to a maximum of £951 for one child or £1,630 for two or more children per month.

Universal Credit can be claimed alongside government childcare hours to help with costs above funded hours. But cannot be claimed alongside Working Tax Credits or Tax-Free Childcare. Parents must have an income below a certain level – this varies depending on families circumstances.

You may be able to claim up to 85 per cent of your childcare costs if you’re eligible for Universal Credit and meet some additional conditions. The amounts you can receive in childcare costs are:

  • a maximum of £951 per month for one child

  • a maximum of £1630 per month for 2 or more children

Working parents on Universal Credit are now able to receive further financial help with their childcare costs. This could be up to £951 for 1 child or up to £1,630 for 2 or more children. Eligible parents claiming Universal Credit are also able to get help with their childcare upfront, so that they can more easily pay their next set of costs. Parents who are moving into work or increasing their working hours should speak to their Universal Credit work coach who can provide more information.
